LICENSE TO PLAY
a documentary work in progress
produced and directed by Ann Rose

currently in post production

The simplest subject of farce is the man who falls down and gets up again. It wouldn't be funny if he didn't get up. We laugh, even as he lies flat on his face, because something in the clumsy dignity of his demeanor tells us he will persevere.

--Ron Jenkins, Acrobats of the Soul

GREEN THE GHETTO
a documentary work in progress
produced and directed by Ann Rose

currently in development

GREEN THE GHETTO will follow children and teenage environmental activists in Bronx, NY as they champion movements against the environmental racism that has plagued this New York City borough for nearly a century.

According to a 2000 report by the South Bronx Clean Air Coalition, the Bronx generates approximately 5% of New York City’s commercial waste, yet it processes 21% of the total. It generates 29% of city sludge, yet it treats 70%. Waste transfer stations, sewage processing plants, deteriorated housing and diesel truck traffic expose citizens to toxic chemicals such as lead, mercury and pesticides, and add to the high rates of respiratory diseases in the area, particularly asthma.

The Bronx has the largest percentage of children under the age of 18 for all of New York City. The rate of asthma among children in the South Bronx is twice the national average. If our children are our future, then in this neighborhood demeaned by a history of poverty, pollution and political corruption, the future is taking charge.
